In February of 2015, i went exploring Rovaniemi… home to Santa Claus in the Arctic Circle region of Finland. Here are the highlights of my trip!
Stay: AirBNB
My first AirBNB experience couldn’t have been more interesting and exotic than staying in Rovaniemi – where almost every house has it’s own sauna!
My host showed me around the lovely town and we even landed up partying together and having (surprise!) the best pizza i’ve had in ages.
Arctic Design Week was happening at the same time while i was in Rovaniemi, so i hopped from Pilke Science Center, Arktikum and a bunch of malls that were hosting the festival. i even made it to one of the live installations by way of a black and white photograph of me there! 🙂
While i tried chasing the Northern Lights on a snowmobile – the experience of the chase turned out to be more exciting than the result itself.
2 hours of driving a mean machine that cuts through snow and camping in the woods was definitely an adventure that i’m glad i signed up for!
When it was time to return to Helsinki though – i managed to do something stupid – book flights for the wrong date. So i eventually landed up taking the train via Oulu. The journey actually turned out to be a wonderful one and i got to experience the world class trains of Finland without planning.
Helsinki – i cannot wait to return!
